Traits leaders need to model for their teams
July 19, 2016
Physician leaders often set the example for others to follow, whether they intend to or not. Modelling the wrong qualities can have a negative impact on others so it’s crucial that leaders promote behaviors that promote strong teamwork. According to author Christopher Burton, MD, the following are some traits leaders should demonstrate:
- Active listening skills. Beyond listening during patient encounters, physician leaders must listen to and observe what is happening in the work environment and throughout the organization. They must also stay current employee and patient trends.
- Supportive of others. Physician leaders should acknowledge the contributions made by others to reinforce the idea that they are appreciated.
- Problem-solving skills. When physician leaders make decisions and help mediate disagreements among team members, they set an example others can follow when handling conflicts.
